MEDIA ADVISORYFor Immediate Release

Historic Re-naming Ceremony  Region 3 of the Metis Nation of Alberta invites Métis people and friends of the Métis to join them at a ceremony re-naming Content Park as Tail Creek Park to reflect its history from the 1870s  when it was known as Trail Creek Metis Settlement.

Métis people and the friends of the Métis are invited to a ceremony on the banks of the Red Deer River on Wednesday, July 30, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. to become a part of this re-naming.

Content Bridge Campground (often called Content Park), which Region 3 has been operating for the past three summers, is believed to have been the site of the Tail Creek Métis Settlement.  In 1874-75, Col. Sam Steele of the Northwest Mounted Police counted 400 cabins at Tail Creek and estimated its population at 2,000 people.  At that time, it was the largest settlement west of Winnipeg – far surpassing Edmonton.  Tail Creek Settlement is near the Tail Creek Cemetery and Boss Hill, a former wintering village, both of which are protected by provincial legislation as Metis Historic Sites.

Refreshments will be served to our Métis and community guests.  Métis entertainment will also be featured.

The location is just South on Highway 21 from the intersection of Highways 11 and 21 on the North shore of the Red Deer River.

Please call Region 3 at 569-8800 or 1-800-267-5844 to confirm your attendance, and indicate whether you need a ride or can offer a ride to someone else.
