April 7/ 2008

Hello,

Métis Local 845 will be delivering a Métis Interpretive Program and undertaking Management of the Brierley Campground at the Rocky Mountain House, National Historic Site for the 2008 Season.

We are seeking employees for 3 positions.  2 Interpreters/Research Assistants who will have some Campground maintenance duties, and a Campground Commissionaire.  I am including the Postings for the positions with descriptions and contact information with this letter.

This is a wonderful opportunity for Youth to be involved with their culture as they represent the Métis contribution to the Fur Trade era during the historic time period of

“life at the Fort”.  Rocky Mountain House National Historic Site is the site on the confluence of the North Saskatchewan and Clearwater Rivers and over the years, 5 different forts were situated here.

We would be most pleased to fill these positions soon, as start date for work is May 7/2008.  Training will be provided, as well as developing the Interpretive “Trappers Tent display”, and schedule of activities for the summer.   Research involves the seeking of information with regard to the Métis families who were in the Rocky area at the time of the trade.  Many were Fort employees, of the Hudson’s Bay Company or North West Company who were rivals at the time, and each had Forts in Rocky simultaneously.  Métis were important, with many roles, guides, intepreters, and provisioners of Pemmican, and Buffalo meat who travelled from Red River by cart, and Free traders, who did not enter the service of either company, but independently traded and sold throughout the Métis homeland.

For the Interpretive positions, we are interested in hiring High School students who may not be available for full time employment until the end of the High School term.  For a qualified applicant, we will consider Part Time employment, then full time once available.  For youth from out of the area, tenting is available, and Local 845 will ensure access to shower, laundrey, and other supports as required.

For the Campground Commissionaire, a mature, bondable, person, who would be willing to spend the weekends at the Campground, is required.  The campground is a tenting site, however a camper will be provided for the Commissionaire’s use. (or they may choose to use their own)   The position requires a physically able person as some light maintenance at the campground will be requires, and likely some wood chopping.   The commissionaire will be responsible for collecting site, and camping fees, light bookkeeping, providing information about the National Historic Site history, the Métis Interpretive Project, and Special events scheduled for the Park in 2008.  Provisioning wood, ensuring safety, security, and compliance with environmental protection as the campground is in a protected area.  This year, we will be offering TP and Trapper’s tent camping, and the Commissionaire along with the Coordinator of the Program, and Interpreters will assist with intake of families or groups wishing to access this service.  The Brierley Rapids afford a fun place for Kayak use, and many canoeists use the site as a stopover while travelling the North Saskatchewan.

The Commissionaire would maintain a presence from Friday AMs to Sunday evenings, or on long weekends, Monday evenings, and their use of the Campground is free.  Compensation for the position is negotiable, includes camping, and may be considered on an honorarium basis if that works best for the applicant.

Thank you in advance for helping us find persons interested in applying for these 3 positions.

Posting and Job descriptions are included with this letter.

The end date for applicants is April 28th with interviews and hiring prior to May 7/2008.
